Subtitled "the Fast Track Guide to Personal and Professional Renewal", this is one of those useful books that helps kick the reader out of complaisant acceptance of all the world's wrongs and gets them moving.

Although it has been done before, this is a very useful kind of book. We all need a bit of hand occasionally to accept the need for change, and the fact that we are going to have to make that change happen. Peggy Grall makes the point forcefully, and gives practical and inspirational guidance on making it happen.

What's interesting for a book that impacts on work life is that Grall doesn't step back from addressing the more "real world" requirements as well. It's as much about changing your personal life as your working habits, reflecting the truth that you can't separate the two. Some may feel that Grall rather over-emphasizes the particular change of leaving your spouse, without doubt one of the harder changes to cope with, but perhaps not one that should be encouraged!

If the book has one fault, there is rather a tendency to come up with those irritating little phrases about life. The cover hits you straight between the eyes with "nothing changes... until someone changes." Perlease. It may be true, but it's rather cringe-making. Still, these inspirational remarks can be ignored and the surrounding useful stuff mined.

If you need a book like this, and many of us do, the difficulty is to move from reading to doing. Grall helps in one way by dividing the book into lots of bite-sized pieces, so you can read a bit and still get on with life, but there's certainly a big hurdle there to be overcome in translating "I want to change" into action.
